The role of teachers in developing students’ life skills has been known for ages. However, as technology and social media connectivity has become more prevalent in this generation’s kids, little did these teachers with medical conditions expect that their medical bills could be paid for with the love of their students, from the convenience of a mobile phone.

55-year-old Kannan V, a High School teacher and 30-year-old C Reena, a teacher from PUP School, call themselves lucky that they got treated on time. It is the students whom they thank most of all because they spread the word and ensured that people they knew contributed towards their online fundraiser on

Kannan was diagnosed with Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome with Septic Shock that put him at great risk of suffering from pneumonia. He was advised 3 weeks of ICU care for recovery at Apollo Hospital. The cost of his treatment was Rs. 25 lakh.

Reena suffered bouts of fits while on the bike with her husband Raja and 1-year-old son. Reena sustained brain hemorrhage and cranial damage. She was advised brain surgery by Apollo Hospitals Chennai. The cost of the surgery and treatment was Rs. 15 lakh.

Both the families started respective crowdfunding campaigns on, a medical crowdfunding platform to arrange money for the treatment. As they waited in the hospital, the word was spread and a total of 230 donors came together and contributed to their beloved teacher Kannan. While Reena received contributions from a total of 430 donors who looked up to her for being a wonderful teacher.

The money they received ensured their treatment regimen was complete. Both the teachers are back to teaching and inspiring lives.

Today, on the occasion of Teachers Day, we salute the devoted students who went out of their way to give their teachers a new life. We also pay our respect to the teachers who instilled the value of generosity, kindness, and sacrifice among their students.

We at wish all the teachers the very best. Happy Teacher’s Day!
