“On Wednesdays, we wear pink.”
We may all have heard this pop culture-iconic line from the film ‘Mean Girls’. But as the tide turns pink on every street, from t-shirts and ribbons to billboards and campaigns, we are currently witnessing it in action not just on Wednesdays but throughout October.
Many of us are aware of Pinktober through social media hashtags and trending campaigns, but let’s pause and reflect on its true purpose. Pinktober is observed every October to raise awareness about breast cancer, advocate for research, and promote treatment initiatives.

While Pinktober campaigns often mean well, the over-commercialization of the movement is cause for concern. Brands must be mindful of the serious nature of this cause and ensure that the message is not diluted into mere pink signs and products.
Let’s Talk About Pinktober: How It Began
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or as it is now called, Pinktober, began in 1985 with the vision to advocate for its early detection and to honour the struggles of breast cancer survivors. It started as a week-long initiative by the American Cancer Society with the help of Betty White, a breast cancer survivor herself.
Since its immense success, thousands of creative campaigns have emerged as a way to direct attention towards breast cancer awareness. It's concerning to note that in recent times, Pinktober has been seen as a flashy trend and just another way of advertising. The sheer amount of pink-themed products during this time makes one wonder – “Is this actually making a difference?”
It’s time to take a step back and reconsider how we can make Pinktober more meaningful, preventing its further commercialization.

Say No To Pinkwashing
According to ‘Breast Cancer Action’, the term ‘pinkwashing’ refers to “A company or organization that claims to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribbon product, but at the same time sells products containing chemicals that are linked to the disease.”

In recent years, many brands have started pinkwashing their products as a way to easily attract the attention of the breast cancer community. This practice can be extremely harmful to breast cancer patients, who may assume these products to be safe due to their Pinktober-themed packaging.
Moreover, for some breast cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones, seeing pink memorabilia everywhere can be a troubling reminder of their struggles. To them, it seems like a distraction from a greater understanding of the reality of breast cancer.
Hence, along with raising awareness, creating real change must also be a priority. That means saying no to pinkwashing and ensuring that the voices of our breast cancer warriors don’t go unheard.
Going Beyond Pink: Show Your Solidarity
The theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2024, ‘No one should face breast cancer alone’, sets the spotlight on the need to support breast cancer patients and redefine the Pinktober moment.
Hence, to know the true purpose behind Pinktober, one needs to go to the core, which lies in the lived experiences of breast cancer survivors. More than anything, what breast cancer patients need is support and solidarity.

Breast cancer treatments can be especially draining, from chemotherapy and radiation to surgery. No cancer journey is the same. Depending on the type and stage of breast cancer, someone may be cured only after a few rounds of chemotherapy and a mastectomy, while someone may need months or even years of treatment to keep their breast cancer under control.

Mental strength is crucial when battling cancer, but another challenge surfaces in the form of inaccessible or unaffordable healthcare. Cancer treatments are highly expensive, amounting to lakhs of rupees. Patients have no choice but to take up loans, or even sell their jewellery or homes to afford treatment, adding to their stress.
During these trying times, it is especially important that we show our true solidarity in their struggles. One such way to show our support is through crowdfunding, which is the practice of raising funds with the help of a large number of people contributing small amounts of money.
How ImpactGuru Supports Breast Cancer Patients
Many breast cancer patients choose ImpactGuru, India’s leading crowdfunding platform, to be their pillar of support in tough times. One can easily raise funds for various breast cancer treatment costs with the support of generous donors across the world.
With ImpactGuru, one can have a safer recovery journey without worrying about having to return the funds raised through crowdfunding. In many ways, this helps ensure a smoother transition to normal life after an emotionally draining experience.
So, if someone you know is suffering from breast cancer or any other critical illness, consider starting a free fundraiser for them and be their strength throughout this difficult journey. This can be an effective way to show true solidarity this Pinktober.
