World Rose Day - Honoring the Courage Of Those Bravely Battling Cancer

It’s that time of the year again to give out, well, not roses, but show some love.

It’s a day in honor of those fighting a deadly disease like Cancer. This day is dedicated to them and appreciates their courage and bravado. Cancer patients often undergo a lot of mental trauma during the treatment process. Thus, celebrating this day is to bring happiness and create awareness that they can face the terrible disease with strong willpower.

World Rose Day 2023, also known as the Day for Welfare of Cancer Patients, will be observed on September 22nd, just like every year. The idea behind this day is to cheer the patients with blood cancer and give them renewed hope to stay strong and fight their battles. A rose symbolizes this day, as we associate it with love, care, and concern.

The concept of celebrating World Rose Day was initiated by Melissa Rose, a Canadian by birth who died from the disease in 1996. Her actions moved many other sufferers of Cancer, and in her memory, it is annually celebrated to boost the spirits and keep the patients lively. It brings attention to the struggle faced by those who are living with Cancer.

“The human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it.” Miss Rose exemplified what living life to the fullest was all about while she fought the biggest battle of her life.

The History Behind World Rose Day

Cancer is one of the world's deadliest diseases, and millions of individuals are affected by it each year. As per reports of Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), globally, there were an estimated 20 million new cases of Cancer and 10 million deaths from Cancer.

Rose suffered from Askin’s Tumor, which is a rare form of blood cancer that is often detected quite late. Once Rose was diagnosed, the doctors had given her only a few weeks to live as the Cancer had spread too far. After that, Rose lived for only six months.

During those six months at the treatment center, she wrote poems and letters and cheered on other patients and medical staff suffering from Cancer. She was deeply affected by the support and care she received during her illness and wanted to create a day to spread similar love and compassion to all cancer patients.

World Rose Day was born like this, and since then, it has become an important day in the calendar for cancer patients worldwide.

Today, various caregivers, families, and friends give cards, roses, messages, letters, and gifts to cancer patients and make them realize they aren’t alone in the fight against Cancer.

There are numerous organizations worldwide that dedicate themselves to serving cancer patients and helping them by showing constant support, resources, information, and funding.

ImpactGuru has helped in raising funds for the treatment needed by cancer patients over the years.

We successfully helped a single mother in overcoming this deadly disease by giving her and her family emotional and financial support in her times of distress. Kajal was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer, and her world turned completely upside down. But she refused to give up hope. With her family by her side and with the support of thousands of generous donors, Kajal returned home and is on the road to recovery.

This is not all. We also helped a young boy suffering from Cancer by starting a fundraiser for him on ImpactGuru. Niral had just aced his 10th board, but little did he know his life was about to change, and not in a good way. He was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma (a type of cancer that attacks soft tissues) of the Left Sino-Nasal Cavity.

Cancer ended up disfiguring half his face, but the brave 17-year-old never gave up hope. Niral’s father created a fundraising campaign on ImpactGuru, and within days, they had raised enough money to get the life-saving surgery he needed.

Another story that’s close to all our hearts is the one of baby Pranaya - When he turned two, his belly became abnormally large, and he would constantly have high fever. After spending hours in hospitals, his parents received the heart-breaking news - Pranaya had Bone Cancer.

Despite undergoing surgery after surgery, the Cancer refused to subside, but his parents did not give up hope. They created a fundraising campaign on ImpactGuru, and with the help of hundreds of kind donors, the family was able to raise the funds needed to save their little one.

The beauty of crowdfunding and the generosity of donors across the globe is what World Rose Day stands for - the day is a constant reminder for us of the importance of empathy and compassion for cancer patients and their families.

No matter how difficult life may be, there will always be people who care and want the patients to navigate through this terrible disease. More importantly, the day serves as a way to further create awareness of Cancer and sensitize individuals to what cancer patients go through.
