Bladder Cancer Diagnosis

1. Urine Cytology- A pathologist analyzes a urine specimen under a microscope to look for any malignant or precancerous cells. They may also prescribe a urine test to rule out an infection, producing symptoms similar to bladder cancer.

 2. Cystoscopy and Retrograde Pyelography- A cystoscopy technique can be used if your doctor suspects you have a tumour forming in your ureters. Ureters are tubes that transfer urination from kidney to bladder. A cystoscope is a narrow tube with a lens that allows them to properly view every part of the body.

During this treatment, they may insert a dye into the urinary system and take an X-ray to help them view the region better, termed retrograde pyelography. These instruments provide your doctor with a clearer image to look for cancers.

3. Bladder Cancer Diagnosis CT Scan- A CT scan provides a 3D representation of your body using cross-sectional images. A study of your abdominal area can determine whether your urination system is healthy. A CT may indicate how far it has grown beyond your bladder if cancer is found.

4. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) – MRI scan employs magnetic fields to provide a detailed picture of your abdomen and pelvis. This test may indicate whether your bladder function is normal and how far it has travelled beyond the bladder if cancer is diagnosed. MRI is preferable over CT for specific persons with impaired renal function.

5. Ultrasound- This technique utilises sonic waves to determine whether you have malignancies in your bladder.

6. Transurethral resection (TURBT)- TURBT is a surgical treatment performed in the operating room with general or spinal anaesthesia. A telescope is placed into the bladder using a special cystoscope, and the tumour is scraped off the bladder wall (a part of the bladder wall is taken out with it, which is called a resectoscope). This treatment may be used for both diagnostics and therapy purposes.
