How 500+ Donors Came Together to Save a Tailor’s Daughter from Liver Failure

“Ab nanhi Iqra ki tabiyat kaisi hai?”

This question, seemingly innocent, weighed heavily on my heart for years. It followed me outside our humble home in Dharavi, down the staircase, and sometimes even outside my husband’s tailoring shop.

What do you even say when your baby’s fight began when she was just 7 days old? 

That what once was simply jaundice, escalated to liver failure with no warning?

But today, when people ask, curious to know more, I begin with a story.

Just days after birth, doctors diagnosed my Iqra with jaundice.

Her soft skin, her innocent eyes—turned dangerously yellow within a matter of hours.

She spent the early months of her life in and out of hospitals, crying and in constant, unbearable pain.

When her condition still did not improve, we got a sonography done.

The results shattered us: Iqra’s tiny liver had been damaged beyond repair.

She was just 8 months old then, so tiny & fragile…and already fighting for her life.

Doctors advised the best plan of action was to get a Liver Transplant as soon as possible, so that the damage wouldn’t spread to other organs.

Luckily, my husband was a perfect match as the liver donor for our daughter.

But the cost of the liver transplant brought our momentary relief to a standstill. Never had we imagined that our financial situation would decide our daughter’s fate.

My husband worked as a humble tailor and earned merely ₹10,000 a month. If we ate one meal in the morning, there would be no guarantee if we would be able to afford one in the evening. How could we possibly afford the liver transplant that would save my Iqra’s life?

Looking back now, I can hardly believe the positive turning point our struggles took once ImpactGuru came into our lives. It almost feels like a miracle now.

I had no idea what online fundraising was at that point, so I was a bit sceptical. But I was willing to do anything to save my precious daughter’s life. 

Once we started a fundraiser, the rest was history. 

Every day brought new hope in the form of kind souls who contributed to Iqra’s liver transplant. I couldn’t fathom the outpouring of love and support we received from well-wishers across India.

It was like I had been shown a different side of the world that I was used to, one filled with caring and compassionate citizens.

In a matter of months, we were able to raise ₹8,25,383 with the help of more than 500 donors! With the raised funds, my Iqra got a second gift of life through a new liver, donated by her father. 

The memory of the day we finally brought her home still brings a smile to my face. It was the happiest day of my life.

Today, little Iqra is 1.5 years old and runs around the neighbourhood, her giggles echoing through the streets of Dharavi.
