“Tip, tip barsa paani…”

It’s all Bollywood’s fault, honestly. :P

From breaking into dance numbers in the pouring rain to splashing in muddy puddles without a care in the world, monsoons in Bollywood are the backdrop for joyous and nostalgic moments.

Add to that, the steaming cup of chai and pakoras sizzling in the pan, the mitti di khushboo after the first rain of the season, cozy afternoons with a book by the foggy window pane…uff! The list goes on.

But here’s the twist: monsoon is a bit like that Instagram filter. It looks picture-perfect from afar, but once you step outside, the rose-coloured glasses come off.

Here’s the Not-So-Dreamy Side of the Rainy Season

With flooded roads that make you question whether your office is worth the swim, mosquitoes buzzing over every source of light, and unavoidable traffic jams, the dreamy rains start to feel more like a survival test.

Moreover, the ever-present risk of catching an infection lurking in the air and water doesn’t make matters any better. Frequent changes in the weather from hot and humid to cold and damp make our immunity weaker, leading to colds, coughs and fevers getting far too common.

On the extreme side, malaria and dengue cases are also on the rise during this season, with 4,471 malaria cases in Maharashtra this year alone.

As scary as these numbers sound, monsoons aren’t all that bad…only if we know how to take care of ourselves.

The downpour can bring its share of chaos, but with the right precautions, it still has the power to make the rainy season cinematic.

Let’s explore some basic lifestyle tips to have a safe monsoon in India:

1. Remove stagnant water around your home

Stagnant water is a mosquito’s best friend. Look out for small collections of water in nearby cans, pots, or any other vessel, and clean them regularly.

2. Avoid street food and uncovered items

There’s a reason our mothers stopped us from having our favourite chaat during the rainy season; the moist weather makes uncovered food a hotspot for flies and infections.

3. Don’t walk in dirty water or jump in puddles

We know this is a hard one, especially if you’re feeling nostalgic. Unfortunately, walking in dirty water exposes your feet to viruses and bacteria that can cause skin infections.

4. Wash your hands and feet after returning home

With waterlogging everywhere, stepping in puddles or getting splashed by a rickshaw (hate when that happens) is inevitable. No worries, just wash your hands and feet thoroughly with soap once you get home to avoid germs.

5. Use mosquito repellents and cover up well

Long sleeves, mosquito nets and repellent creams are your best bet to avoid deadly mosquitoes that can spread dengue and malaria.

While these monsoon tips may seem simple, almost obvious, these everyday habits can help you keep common monsoon diseases at bay efficiently, and make the most of the monsoon season.

Your Health Doesn’t Have to Take a Rain Check

Everyday habits keep the small troubles away, but your health also needs a bit of foresight. It’s critical, especially in the monsoons, to remain up-to-date on all your vaccinations for conditions like influenza, typhoid, hepatitis A & B, and more.

While it’s easy to dismiss a cough, fever, or stomach bug as ‘just seasonal’, ignoring symptoms only makes things worse. Getting medical help at the right time is important to prevent a minor issue from escalating into extreme conditions like malaria or dengue.

At ImpactGuru, we believe that timely access to quality healthcare, especially in the monsoon, can make all the difference.

That’s why we not only support families in need of treatment but also share awareness that empowers them to take precautions, seek help on time, and keep their loved ones safe. Our goal is to ensure that health never has to take a backseat, no matter the season.

Enjoy the Rains, the Right Way

At the end of the day, the monsoon season will always have its charm. It’s a season that invites us to pause and enjoy life’s little pleasures.

But as much as we soak in its beauty, it’s just as important to stay mindful. A little extra care for hygiene, a bit of attention to health, and timely prevention can make all the difference between enjoying the rains and dreading them.
