21st August is internationally recognized as World Senior Citizen Day. One of the main ideas behind it is to increase awareness over the various issues affecting senior citizens, such as physical ailments and financial insecurity. People around the world take this day as an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of our elders in society.
Senior citizens play a very important role in shaping the future of younger generations with their vast knowledge and experience. Our elders are the gatekeepers of knowledge and traditions. We still use the food recipes left behind by our grandmothers, we still use words from a far-away aunt’s vocabulary, and still love to hear stories set in a time when you could buy chocolates for under a rupee.
Senior Citizens in India
According to various surveys across the country, for many Indian senior citizens the most important concerns currently prevailing are healthcare costs, lack of monetary support and seclusion or loneliness. In addition to this, there is not much awareness about geriatric health, which means care for older adults who are not able to optimally take care of themselves.
Some of the darkest prevailing issues that senior citizens go through are ones that affect their psychological state such as dementia, depression, and Alzheimer’s. It is no wonder, then, that many senior citizens fear living alone. What happens if they experience a medical emergency? How would they access or even afford that?
One way of making a difference to our older citizens’ lives and addressing such queries would be crowdfunding.
How does crowdfunding help?
Crowdfunding channels the power of the people where small donations and social media shares add on to each other and transform into an unending chain of impact. Crowdfunding platforms in India offer the chance to both start a fundraiser and donate to a cause you believe in. It is the most direct way of making a difference in the lives of people that we wish to support. Senior citizens living alone or at homes can be helped through fundraising. Families who want to take care of their parents or grandparents but cannot afford their treatment can easily start an online fundraiser in a few minutes.
Crowdfunding platforms in India, like ImpactGuru, can help senior citizens raise funds at home by offering them and even their families financial and emotional support.
Many families have started fundraising for their parents or grandparents on ImpactGuru as it helps them to raise funds efficiently and in time. Below is one such story:
Balambiga R fights Cerebral Infarction
Balasubramaniam M is raising funds for his mother Balambiga R who is fighting Cerebral Infarction (a stroke). This medical emergency requires them to raise Rs 5 lakhs.
If you want to show your support, you can share his fundraiser or make a donation here.
It just goes to show that anything is possible when we put our minds - and hearts to making things happen. If you want to do your part this Senior Citizen Day then you too can Start a fundraiser to set up elderly support at your home, or help them by donating to a cause of your choice.
