Are We Truly Free? Rethinking Freedom Through Our Health?

Independence beyond history. India gained independence from British rule in 1947, but decades later, a new question emerges: when did we move from chains of slavery to chains of screens, addiction and unhealthy habits? While the chains of the past were visible, the ones that affect us today can be far more subtle-shaping how we eat, sleep, work, move and live.
True independence also means having the freedom to make choices that protect our health.
Are we prisoners of convenience?
We often associate unhealthy habits with obvious choices such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption or eating junk food. But the habits affecting our health have become so deeply woven into everyday life that we barely notice them anymore. Ordering food instead of cooking, spending hours on screens, sitting for prolonged periods and turning to alcohol or tobacco as stress relievers can gradually become part of our routine.
The problem is not simply indulgence, but it is when these choices become a pattern that begins to shape how we eat, move, sleep, and cope with stress.
The World Health Organisation identifies unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful alcohol consumption among the major behavioural risk factors for noncommunicable diseases[NCDs]. These behaviours can contribute to conditions such as obesity, raised blood pressure, high blood glucose and high cholesterol, increasing the risk of diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases.
Our growing dependence on convenience can also contribute to a more sedentary lifestyle.
Similarly, alcohol and tobacco are often viewed as ways to relax, socialise or cope with stress. But their harmful use is an established risk factor for NCDs. What may feel like a way to escape stress in a moment can, over time, contribute to a cycle that affects both physical and mental wellbeing.
Perhaps the most concerning part is that these forms of dependency rarely arrive with visible chains. They become part of our routines, such as one meal, one cigarette, one drink, one late night and one inactive day at a time.
And the habits are raising an important question: if our habits are beginning to control how we live, are we truly as free as we think we are?
Let's have a look at some of the very common diseases and problems caused by unhealthy lifestyles.
Cardiovascular diseases: CVDs are among the major health concerns linked to unhealthy lifestyle habits. CVDs are the leading cause of death in India, accounting for roughly 25% to 33% of all total mortality. Lack of physical activity, an unhealthy diet, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and high blood sugar, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Chronic Respiratory Diseases: Chronic respiratory diseases can also be influenced by lifestyle and environmental factors. Tobacco smoking is one of the major preventable risk factors and can damage the lungs over time, increasing the risk of conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]. While India represents approximately 18% of the world's population, it accounts for 32% of all global Disability-Adjusted Life Years [DALYs] and approximately 30% of global deaths caused by chronic respiratory illness.

Mental Health Problems: The impact is not limited to physical health. Mental health and well-being can also suffer when unhealthy habits become a regular part of life. Chronic stress, poor sleep, physical inactivity and unhealthy coping mechanisms can affect mood, concentration, energy levels and our ability to manage everyday challenges.

Other lifestyle-related problems, including obesity and type 2 diabetes, are also becoming increasingly common. While not every disease can be prevented through lifestyle changes alone, adopting healthier habits can help reduce the risk of many preventable health problems.

To be free is to choose what serves your well-being over what satisfies your comfort. Change begins when we step outside our comfort zones and become more mindful of how we eat, sleep, react, and care for ourselves. As Leigh Hunt rightly said, “The groundwork of all happiness and the highest form of liberty is good health.” This is why understanding the importance of healthy lifestyle habits is essential, because WE CAN.

Let’s Pledge for Freedom from the Cycle of Dependence
Action | Reaction |
🍕 Poor diet | Increased risk of health complications |
🛏️ Physical Inactivity | Sedentary lifestyle |
🚬 Smoking and Tobacco use | Increased risk of disease |
📲 Excessive screen time | Less movement and increased sedentary behaviour |

The action is ours. So is the reaction. Now is the time to make healthier choices.
Effective Ways to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle does not require major changes overnight. It begins with small and consistent steps. Regular exercise helps keep the body active and supports overall fitness, while a balanced and nutritious diet provides essential nutrients and energy.
Bring mindfulness into your day; yoga and meditation can help improve flexibility, reduce stress and support mental well-being. Prioritize your sleep; having a good sleep schedule supports your immune system, mental well-being and other cognitive functions.

Making time for hobbies and activities we enjoy can also help us relax and maintain a healthy balance in our daily lives, so move more and sit less. Most importantly, staying away from tobacco, harmful alcohol use, and other forms of addiction can help protect our long-term mental and physical health.
Lastly, eat healthy; a wholesome diet consisting of the right amounts of carbs, protein, fibre and nutrients is far more suitable for your body than relying on junk food. By making these simple choices a part of our routine, we can take greater control of our health and live a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Prevention can reduce many health risks, but it cannot eliminate every illness. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, medical emergencies happen,n and the financial burden can make an already difficult situation even harder. In such cases, crowdfunding platforms like ImpactGuru can help patients and their families raise funds for necessary medical treatments.
How Can Crowdfunding Help Raise Funds?
ImpactGuru, India's leading crowdfunding platform, plays a crucial role during medical emergencies by:
Helping families raise funds for critical medical treatments and potential surgeries.
Connecting them with a community of changemakers willing to hear their story and provide support.
Thus, beyond medical bills, ImpactGuru becomes a comprehensive support system. True independence is not just freedom from unhealthy habits; it is also about having the awareness, support and resources to protect our health and fight illness when it comes our way.
So this Independence day lets pledge for freedom to feel and heal.
Happy Independence Day !!!!
