A Day In The Life Of A Teen Kyphoscoliosis Survivor

A fresh start.

Waking up. Playing with friends. Being hopeful for the future. Everything feels… new. 

The past decade has been a rollercoaster of emotions. My journey began when I was first diagnosed with  Idiopathic Thoracic Kyphoscoliosis at 10 years of age. I suffered from this abnormal curve in my spine for almost a decade - it took away the ability to do ordinary things every day like waking up from bed or walking normally.

Initially, my scoliosis was very mild, but slowly, it progressed and progressed until my life was changed forever. 

Reflections

On the surface, I try to put on a brave face as I watch my family and close friends talk about my strong will and how I survived this past decade. Nevertheless, there are days when I contemplate the second life I have received. And trust me, I feel lucky every single day for the life I am living right now.

Life Before Treatment

I used to get jealous as I watched my fellow mates begin another year at school, gear up for the future, or go on adventures, whereas I would just dwell on my condition. Getting bullied for a condition I never asked for. 

After all, I wondered, who would accept me with something like this? 

But do you know what kept me going?

My Amma and Appa. 

It was years of perseverance and my family’s support and the support I received from ImpactGuru this year that has kept me strong… and hopeful.

The challenges of living with Kyphoscoliosis can be tough. But with challenges, comes an opportunity—an opportunity to fight back against the uncommon.  

I was fortunate to receive my expensive treatment.  The doctors recommended Posterior Instrumentation, Anterior Release, and Deformity Correction for a severe spinal deformity like mine. The cost for which rounded up to Rs. 13 Lakh. Since my father is the sole breadwinner of the family, it was overwhelming for him to raise funds for the treatment. 

But then...

I will be eternally grateful to all the medical professionals, my family, and above all, ImpactGuru for being a support system from the beginning of my healing journey to the end. 

My scoliosis experience has given me a purpose and a passion in life, despite the challenges. I have learned to focus more on the positive side of life. My passion is to continue my education and be an engineer one day. And this light of passion has only been possible because of kind donors like you.

My hope in sharing this story is to encourage everyone to raise awareness for the scoliosis community. 

There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Never give up.
