“As a father, you imagine celebrating your child’s first words, first steps, and first birthday. Instead, I find myself sitting beside my one-year-old son, Pranav, inside Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, Mysuru, praying that he makes it to his next tomorrow.

Pranav has been diagnosed with Autoimmune Enteropathy, a rare condition where his own immune system attacks his intestines. This means his body cannot absorb food like a normal child’s. 

The doctors say he needs TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition), which is a way to feed him directly through his veins because his stomach can’t process food. He is also on immunosuppression medicines, these reduce the activity of his immune system so it stops harming him. Along with that, he needs a long hospital stay and constant monitoring.

“Every time I see him cry from hunger, my heart breaks, because I cannot give him food like other kids his age.”

The hardest part is watching his tiny body fight a battle he never asked for. While other children his age learn to walk, Pranav learns to stay attached to IV lines. While other parents worry about toys and clothes, I worry about how to arrange the funds for his treatment.

But in the middle of all this, Pranav smiles. And that smile gives me hope. He has a strength far bigger than his one year of life. As his father, I hold on to that strength because it’s all I have.
