Story

“Mama has been inspiring me since I was a kid. Her force and drive to do anything she sets her mind to is what is extremely admirable to me. One day I wish to give her a life she truly deserves.” - Kavita’s son.

When Kavita was first diagnosed in 2015, her children were scared, what would happen to Mama? How are we going to face this? the questions that kept running in their little minds.

They watched her struggle on a daily basis, facing fevers and weakness. As they think that Mama is the strongest person they know, they never imagined she would have to bear such weakness.

What is making Kavita face weakness?

In 2015, Kavita was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and in 2021, she faces a recurrence.

Breast cancer is a disease that occurs when breast cells grow out of control and form tumours. The tumours can spread to other parts of the body and become fatal if left untreated.

“My children are my life. I want to be there for them as they grow up and raise them to be responsible adults. I can already see how much they love and adore me. I never want to let that go”- Kavita Popat.

Kavita’s doctors at Sir H N Hospital, Mumbai have briefed her about the breast cancer including the following important details:

Symptoms

Signs of breast cancer include a lump, change in breast shape, dimpling, fluid from the nipple, a red or scaly patch of skin, or a newly inverted nipple.

Types

The most common type of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma, which starts in the milk ducts. Lobular carcinoma is another type that starts in the milk glands.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the type of cancer, the patient, and how far the cancer has spread. Treatments include surgery, radiation therapy, and medications” - say the doctors.

Kavita wonders how she is going to tackle this. She thinks that at 46 years old, she still needs to provide for her children and give them a good education. But with cancer, she is cautious and stressed.

What is the treatment that Kavita needs?

Kavita will need to receive Chemotherapy and Targeted Therapy. She will also have to undergo surgery and radiation to beat the weakness she faces.

Here’s how it will help alleviate Kavita’s pain:

Chemotherapy is a common treatment for breast cancer that uses anti-cancer drugs to destroy cancer cells. It can be used before, after, or in combination with surgery.

Targeted therapy, also known as molecularly targeted therapy, is a cancer treatment that uses drugs or other substances to target specific molecules in cancer cells. The goal of targeted therapy is to slow cancer growth, destroy cancer cells, or relieve cancer-related symptoms.

How Targeted therapy will help Kavita:

Helping the immune system kill cancer cells
Directly causing cancer cell death
Interfering with the biochemical pathways that control cancer growth, division, and spread

Along with this, she will also need injections as well as medication.

The treatment is costing Kavita lakhs, and as she works in an insurance company to help her children live a stable life, she will need your help to have a successful cancer treatment.

The goal amount of the campaign may be higher than the attached estimates to address and aid the post-hospitalization expenses/contingencies including but not limited to prolonged medication, diagnostics, rehabilitation therapies, and follow-up doctor visits/consultations which vary from disease to disease.

Such decision is in entirety of campaigner / patient / beneficiary and / or their family members without any interference and / or say of Impact Guru. Impact Guru is absolved of any liability in respect thereof.

TREATMENT COST ESTIMATES
Impact Guru has no control over the cost estimates provided by hospitals / clinics / pharmaceutical companies etc. The cost estimates vary depending on the city and / or hospital where the patient is under treatment, professional fees of the treating doctors, drugs / medicines / therapies chosen for treatment by patient or patient’s family at their own discretion including but not limited to unique medical conditions / circumstances pertaining to each patient.

UTILIZATION OF FUNDS
In the rare scenario of surplus funds remaining within the fundraising campaign due to any of the following circumstances: i) Completion of the Patient's treatment; ii) Receipt of requisite funding for the Patient from alternative sources; iii) Eligibility of the Patient for free treatment under any scheme or the receipt of free treatment by other means; iv) Demise of the Patient; v) Fulfilment of the fundraising campaign's objectives; vi) Termination of the fundraising campaign for any reason; vii) Reduction in the cost of the treatment,
Impact Guru shall have the discretion to use such surplus funds to allocate to i) other patients on Impact Guru for their life-saving treatment and/or donors to provide health benefits with object to maximize social impact; and/or ii) donors of the fundraising campaign at the sole discretion of Impact Guru may be offered the option to claim a pro-rata refund of surplus funds.

PATIENT DEATH UPDATE
Upon the death of the patient, the Campaigner / close relative / POC on behalf of the patient shall be duty bound to inform Impact Guru immediately within two (2) hours of such occurrence and turn off the donations tab (through the internal access granted) on the campaign on Impact Guru Platform in order to stop fundraising on the campaign. In the event Campaigner or authorised/designated POC on behalf of the patient fails to do so and campaign continues raising funds due to such non-information/non action, the Campaigner or authorised/designated POC on behalf of the patient shall be personally liable any consequences thereof; further, Impact Guru shall be disclaimed of all the liabilities occurring with respect to such post death fundraising and the such liability in entirety shall accrue on Campaigner or authorised/designated POC on behalf of the patient. In the event of death of the patient, Impact Guru’s Patient Death Policy at Terms Of Use shall apply.

Presently, Kavita has been at her home, and her health is in stable condition so far. She is done with her radiation therapy sessions as of now, and from next week, her chemotherapy sessions, as planned out by her doctors, will commence without fail.
