As a homemaker, she spent her entire life caring for our family. She was the one who woke up before everyone else, she looked after the house, and made sure we never felt a lack of love. Today, my mother lies weak in a hospital bed, struggling just to stay awake.
At 52 years old, my mother Jyoti has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). It is a rare and dangerous type of blood cancer. The disease has slowly taken over her bone marrow, preventing her body from producing healthy blood cells. She feels constant weakness and is at risk of severe infections and internal bleeding.
It all started when her blood counts suddenly dropped. Her hemoglobin, platelets, and white blood cells fell dangerously low. She was first admitted to a hospital in Dhule where she needed urgent blood transfusions. But her condition did not improve.
We rushed her to Nashik where she spent 12 days in the hospital, requiring daily transfusions of blood and platelets just to keep her alive.
When doctors conducted a bone marrow biopsy, the reports initially suggested hypoplastic anemia. But when we shifted her to Manipal Hospital in Pune, doctors confirmed the devastating truth on 10 January 2026. “The only treatment that can save her now is a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant.”, they said.
There is a small ray of hope as my uncle, my mother’s brother has agreed to donate his stem cells so she can receive the transplant. But the transplant process is long and complex. It requires conditioning chemotherapy, a month-long hospital stay, powerful antibiotics, and constant monitoring.
More importantly, it is expensive. So far, we have already spent more than ₹25 lakhs trying to keep my mother alive. To continue her treatment, my family had to take loans from relatives and we even had to sell our home.
My father is a farmer, and our family has no way left to arrange the remaining funds on our own.
As her daughter, it is heartbreaking to watch the woman who raised me grow weaker every day. My mother just wants to go home, sit with her family again, and live peacefully with the people she loves.
