Erratic rainfall, long dry spell, severe water-crisis has made life full of distress and despair for 1000 poor families in Kalahandi. Hunger, malnutrition, crop failure is forcing people to migrate. The project will help to revive defunct traditional water harvesting structures & build new ones ensuring year round availability of water for drinking, household use, irrigation. It will lead to good health, more income, good yield to farmers, ground water recharge & hope for a good LIFE for kids.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
Kalahandi is fighting with acute water crisis due to erratic rainfall & long dry spells for past many years. The distress is causing mass migration, crop failures, death of livestock, and malnutrition. The traditional water bodies that were used to conserve rainwater to meet the water needs of the people have become defunct due to indiscriminate use of water, lack of maintenance & lack of awareness about its significance with the younger generation. The project will affect 1000 poor families.
HOW WILL THIS PROJECT SOLVE THE PROBLEM?
The project will renovate and build the critical water harvesting structures to ensure year round availability of water for the 1000 poor families. Community based groups will be formed to maintain and ensure judicious use of stored water. Planting of trees and kitchen gardens will be taken up. Awareness campaigns about environment and ways of conservation will be initiated. Your donations will help to bring hope for 1000 families by rejuvenating the water resources and building awareness.
POTENTIAL LONG TERM IMPACT
The life of 1000 families will transform with the year round availability of water for drinking, household use, irrigation. It will lead to better health & nutrition status, increased crop production, opportunity to earn regular income in their own village thus minimizing the migration. It will enable the increase in literacy rates as children will not have to accompany their parents while migrating. It will contribute to the environment conservation and sustainability through community action.
