The day I saw my brother barely able to speak, my world came to a standstill. From being the sole earning member as a security guard to make ends meet for his family of 4, to now facing difficulty doing the most basic tasks like speaking and swallowing food. The journey has been tough.
What troubles my brother?
Akhilesh Sharma has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Tongue and Throat Cancer. The diagnosis came after significant symptoms led to a medical examination, resulting in an urgent need for surgery.
Symptoms prior to diagnosis may have included:
Difficulty speaking or swallowing
Persistent mouth or throat pain
Visible or palpable tumour growth
My brother has undergone major surgery where his entire tongue was removed, and tumours inside his throat were also removed. He is currently hospitalised and recovering post-surgery, facing a difficult phase of his life, awaiting further treatment.

What is the treatment required?
The doctors at New Dolphin Children's Hospital, Hanamkonda suggested treatment including:
Chemotherapy
Radiotherapy
Medications
Follow-up care
Rehabilitation and speech therapy
They have advised the chemotherapy and radiation therapy urgently to prevent further spread or recurrence of cancer and have stressed the urgency of after surgery to:
Control any remaining cancer cells
Prevent recurrence or further spread
Delay in treatment could severely impact survival and recovery chances
The treatment comes at a hefty cost in lakhs but currently, Akhilesh has been unable to work, leaving his family with no income. His wife, a homemaker and 2 children - a daughter of 10 years and a son of 2 years are praying that he soon speaks to them again.
The family has been managing expenses using their own savings, seeking financial help from relatives and well-wishers and spending over 3.5 lakh rupees on surgery, hospitalisation and initial diagnosis.
