Story

Some days, I look at my daughter and forget for a moment that she is sick. Then the reality hits me: my little girl, Avantika, just 9 years old, is fighting blood cancer.

It started in 2021 with a simple fever. We thought it was something that would pass. But it didn’t. Test after test, and then that word I will never forget: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. The doctors explained it as cancer of the blood, but for me, it meant endless hospital visits, medicines, and watching my daughter suffer when she should be out playing.

Avantika is under treatment at Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, where she is going through chemotherapy. The nurses tell me she is brave, and it’s true. Even when her body is weak, she looks at me and says, “Ma, I’ll be fine. Don’t cry.” Her words break me because I am supposed to comfort her, not the other way around.

It is just the 2 of us. I am the only earning member, managing everything on my income. Life has become about choosing: rent or medicines, food or tests. So far, I have managed to pay for some of her treatment, but the road ahead is still long. I haven’t sold any gold or land, we have none. It’s just me, her, and hope.

Chemo is hard. She loses her hair, her appetite, her strength. There are nights she cannot sleep from the pain, and I sit by her bed holding her hand, wishing I could take it all away. There are mornings she refuses to eat, and I beg her to take one bite. And then there are moments when she dreams aloud, like any 9-year-old. “Ma, when I’m better, can we go to the park again?”

I hold on to these dreams. They are what keep me going. She doesn’t dream of big things, just to get better, just to live like other children.

I am sharing this because I cannot do it alone anymore. My daughter deserves a chance to heal, a chance to grow up. If you can help us, even a little, it will mean one more round of medicine, one more step closer to her future.

Avantika just wants to recover faster. And I just want to see her run free again.
