“I have endured chemotherapy, pain and weakness, but I am not ready to give up on my life.” - Sameena Shaik, 46.

For the past eight months, my wife Sameena and I have been living a life we never imagined. Instead of planning our days around our family, we now plan them around her hospital visits, chemotherapy, medicines and medical bills.

Sameena was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in December 2025. Since then, I have watched the woman who spent her life caring for our home endure pain, weakness and the exhausting side effects that come with cancer treatments.

But despite eight months of those treatments, her tumour has progressed further and has begun causing skin involvement. Sameena’s doctors have told us that we cannot stop now as she needs 3 more chemotherapy cycles, comprising 12 doses, followed by radiation and surgery depending on her response.

I have done everything within my reach to keep Sameena’s treatment going. We have used nearly ₹6–7 lakh of our savings and borrowed around ₹8 lakh from my employer, friends and relatives. Around ₹15–16 lakh has already gone towards her treatment. But her treatment demands much more from us.

I am the only earning member of our family. I have watched my wife already lose so much to this illness, her strength, her comfort and months of the life she once knew. Yet she continues to hold on to hope, and I do too.

Sameena has a dream for the day she recovers: to perform Umrah and visit Makkah and Madinah with her family. It may seem like a simple dream, but to us, it represents everything we are fighting for.
