My name is Dipankar Ghosh, and I am 52 years old, living in Kolkata. I always dreamt of a peaceful life after retirement, spending time with my loved ones and enjoying the little joys of life. But today, that dream feels like a distant memory.
Two years ago, I began feeling constant fatigue, chest pain, and swelling in my body. Slowly, my legs felt heavy, and I experienced numbness in my feet, making it hard to walk.
After several hospital visits and countless tests, my life changed forever. I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), which means my kidneys are no longer able to filter toxins from my blood.
Doctors said I would need dialysis, a machine that performs the job of kidneys: three times a week just to survive.
As if that wasn’t enough, my heart began to struggle too. Recently, I suffered a cardiac arrest (my heart stopped beating), and I was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.
I was resuscitated with CPR, put on a ventilator, and treated for:
- Hyperkalemia (dangerously high potassium levels)
- Pneumonia
- Atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat)
With the help of strong antibiotics, dialysis, and continuous care, I slowly recovered, but I am still very weak and unable to walk properly.
Over the past two years, my family and I have spent tens of lakhs on dialysis sessions, hospitalizations, heart medications, and tests.
We sold small jewellery pieces, took out loans, and survived on minimal help from friends. But now, our savings are gone, and we have no income.
I live with two family members, and none of us are currently employed because my condition needs constant attention.
