Two years ago, cancer took away my father. Watching him suffer and losing him was the hardest thing I have ever lived through. I never imagined that I would once again hear doctors use the same terrifying word, this time for my mother, Mukulika.
It all began when she started facing severe abdominal pain in June. She was admitted to Manipal Hospital in Kolkata, where doctors discovered a tumor in her colon. During a colonoscopy, they strongly suspected cancer.
On 24th July, my mother underwent a major surgery. Doctors had to remove part of her colon along with the tumor. Today, she is recovering, but our battle is far from over.
She will be discharged from the hospital, but she cannot return to a normal life. She now has to live with a stoma bag and requires constant care at home. In another two to three months, she must undergo another surgery to remove it. We are also anxiously waiting for her biopsy report, which will determine the next phase of her treatment.
My mother has spent her entire life taking care of our family. She is a homemaker, and the strongest person I know. After my father's passing, it has been just the two of us. She is all the family I have left.

For my mother’s treatment, the expenses have already crossed over ₹9 lakh. While insurance has helped us so far, the journey ahead will involve further surgeries, medical care, investigations, medicines, and recovery expenses that are becoming overwhelming.
I cannot imagine losing my mother after already losing my father to cancer.
