My little Vedashree is only 1 year and 5 months old, but she already knows the pain of hospitals and blood transfusions. She was diagnosed with Beta Thalassemia Major when she was just 4 months old. Since then, almost every four weeks, we have to take her to the hospital when her haemoglobin drops below 9. 

She becomes pale; even her tiny lips lose their colour, and sometimes she cries through the night because of the weakness. As her mother, it hurts to watch my baby go through this again and again. Both my husband and I have Beta Thalassemia Minor, and we never imagined that our little girl would have to inherit this condition from us.

For now, regular blood transfusions are the only way to keep Vedashree’s haemoglobin up, but they cannot be the rest of her life. Doctors have advised a Bone Marrow Transplant, which can give her a chance to be free from Beta Thalassemia Major and the constant need for transfusions.
