It’s never easy to watch a loved one in pain. Our daughters and I watch my husband struggle for something as simple as breathing. There was a time when Palanikumar would wake up, go to work and come home to spend precious moments with our two daughters.
Today, severe breathlessness and a persistent cough have left him battling Type 1 respiratory failure, and we watch helplessly as every breath becomes a struggle for him.
My husband has been battling Interstitial Lung Disease since February 2024. The disease has affected his lungs so severely that he now suffers from hypoxia and needs oxygen support at home. His current SpO₂ is around 94% while on home oxygen.
The hardest part for me is watching him, the father of my children, live this way. I see him depend on oxygen for something as basic as breathing, while our daughters wonder what the future holds for our family.
Doctors have advised him to remain on oxygen support while we wait for a lung donor for transplantation. Until that donor becomes available, we have to keep his condition stable and continue his medical care.
We have already spent around ₹11.5 lakh on my husband’s treatment. I am the only earning member of our family, working as a staff nurse, and carrying the responsibility of our household while also caring for my husband.
Palanikumar wants the chance to breathe normally again, return to everyday life and watch our daughters grow up to be strong women.
