Like every parent, I dreamt of watching my son, Afjal grow, run, play, study, and build a bright future. But today, our lives revolve around a battle we never imagined we would have to fight.
Afjal has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. The first signs appeared when he was barely 3 years old!
He struggled to run like other children. Climbing stairs became difficult. Simple physical activities that most children enjoy started becoming challenges for him.
As parents, we hoped he would eventually catch up with other children. Instead, doctors confirmed our worst fear, our son was living with a disorder that would continue to weaken his muscles over time.
Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Whitefield, Bengaluru, have advised specialized treatment and ₹17 crore Elevidys gene therapy to help slow the progression of this disorder.
They have stressed that timely treatment is critical because delays could lead to further muscle loss and reduce the effectiveness of available treatment options.
Over the years, we have spent more than ₹40 lakh on consultations, tests, medicines, physiotherapy, travel, and ongoing medical care. We exhausted our savings, borrowed money, and sought help from relatives and friends. But despite all our efforts, the financial burden has become overwhelming. I am the sole earning member of our family of five. Along with caring for Afjal, I must also provide for my wife and our two younger children.
Afjal still dreams like any other child. He wants to study, play with his friends, and live a normal life. He does not fully understand the disorder he is fighting. He only knows that some things are becoming harder for him.
As a father, I refuse to give up.
