My name is Tunirani Tripathi, and I’m 28 years old. For as long as I can remember, the sunlight has been my enemy. I was born with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare condition that makes my skin extremely sensitive to the sun’s rays. As a child, I couldn’t play outside like the other kids. While they ran freely, I stayed in the shade, always cautious. Even then, I dreamt of becoming a teacher, of standing before a classroom, helping young minds grow and learn.
But life, as it often does, took an unexpected turn.
In 2018, doctors told me that my condition had turned into cancer. I remember feeling lost, as though my body, which had already betrayed me, was now fighting against me in ways I couldn’t control. In 2023, things grew even worse. The cancer spread so quickly that I had to lose my left hand. It was necessary to stop the cancer from spreading further, but I felt a part of myself slipping away. I clung to hope, though, thinking I could still hold onto the dreams I once had.
But cancer didn’t stop there.
Between 2022 and 2024, my eyesight began to fail. First, my left eye, and now my right is following. The world has grown darker for me, and I can no longer read, write, or even see the faces of my loved ones the way I used to. It feels like my dreams are slipping further out of reach.
My father is a priest, earning just enough to get by. My family has tried everything to get me the care I need, but after eight months without treatment, we’ve exhausted our resources. We simply can’t afford it anymore.
Still, I hold on to my dreams. I dream of teaching, of seeing the world, of finding light even in the darkest of times. I just need a chance.
