The only words I can use to describe Sunayana are caring and strong. She is the most loving mother to our little 4-year-old twins and a hardworking sales associate in the company we work for. Life has taken a different route for my wife now. Each day is a battle for her survival, where I pray that she gets to take her next breath.
What troubles Sunayana?
My heart broke when the doctors at Dr D Y Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre said to us, “ILD (Interstitial Lung Disease), specifically Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.”
Currently, my wife needs 24-hour oxygen support at 2 litres per minute (the rental machine costing Rs. 3000 per month). She struggles to hold a glass of water on her own.
She even feels breathless when going to the washroom or bathing without oxygen and is not comfortable.
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a group of lung disorders that cause inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) in the tissue around the air sacs (alveoli), making it harder for oxygen to enter the bloodstream.
“In this condition, Sunayana’s immune system acts against the body due to infection, primarily affecting the lungs. Her lungs are unable to absorb sufficient oxygen, and eventually, the heart is also affected,” they continued.
The symptoms she faces:
Breathlessness
Cough
Wheezing
Dizziness
Occasional vertigo
Swelling in the body
Weight gain due to steroid use.
What is the treatment required?
Her medications are currently being administered as she remains completely dependent on everyday activities including food. But medication can only slow the progression of the disease, it cannot cure it.
“A lung transplantation is the only definitive treatment,” said her doctors. Post-transplant, she needs lifelong medication and regular doctor consultations are required.
