It’s like Sahil is frozen in time. Without surgery, the 11-year-old has no future - he can’t eat well, go to school, or even play with other kids. He is trapped in pain by a football-sized lump growing atop his spine that feels heavy and rigid like stone. His past, marked by the death of his mother, is even more heartbreaking…
Sahil’s father married me a few years after the death of his wife. He made me promise that I would treat his son like my own child. How could I not? He is such a gentle child. This thin, young boy has been suffering since he was 2-years-old. By the time they finally found that he had Scoliosis with Neuromotor Delay & Limb Dysfunction - the tests, medicines and to and from hospitals had drained what little his parents had saved.
A few years later, Sahil's mom became gravely ill and, despite all efforts, she passed away. My boy never recovered and withdrew further within himself. He rarely talks. Every day his smiles grow more and more rare but when he does, it lights up the room!
When we send him to school, he cannot sit for more than an hour due to the pain of being in one position for so long. Even in school, he sits far away from the other kids, never seeing himself as one of them - a child.
My husband Tansingh is a labourer, earning Rs. 300 per day. There is not enough money for good food on some days, let alone any savings. Doctors at Suretech hospital in Nagpur say that he needs scoliosis correction surgery and neurotherapies. These cost a huge amount - Nobody in our families has ever seen that kind of money!
However, time is running out. Sahil has a very small window to get the surgery successfully. His birthday is in two months, and all he wants is to play and make friends with other kids his age.
When we’re healthy, we don’t realise how much we take for granted. Sahil doesn’t have that luxury. Every day is a battle with pain, and without this surgery, he’ll never get to be a carefree kid.
