Latest Update

HI Friends- I'm writing to share some happy news - our fabulous Nimi will be presented with an award tomorrow, "Innovator of the Year" by E-Unnathi at the Women 2020 International Conference and Awards ceremony!! Congratulations Nimi! Ask her to tell you about the new books that she's trying to get published - they preserve the traditional recipes of women in small tribal communities in India. We are making progress with Nimi's project - we have a design and a builder lined up. Where her current home stands (for the moment anyway), we will build her kitchen. We're moving her family to a modest second-floor apartment which allows us to create a large dining area/classroom adjacent to the kitchen. Nimi will be able to accommodate more students and open a cafe to serve her amazing 4 O'Clock snacks. She'll have a small gift shop where she can sell the specialty ingredients and handicrafts made by the communities that she features in her books so she can help them economically. Finally, please do whatever you can to share this campaign with friends who can help. We've got a way to go and the monsoon season is quickly approaching :-) Nimi is an amazing woman and we've helped her formulate a strong business plan to fulfill her goals of helping others and sharing the unique cuisines of India with others. p.s. Nimi has finally gotten her 4 O'Clock Temptations book set up as an ebook. She is struggling with a pdf of the Lip-Smacking book. Any tech gurus willing to help? We will be sending these ebooks as thank you gifts to those who have contributed $50, $75 or more once they have both been successfully published. Thanks for your generous donations...If each of you 80 donors would be willing to commit to raising $200 by sharing this campaign with friends, we'd reach our goal :-)

Story

My name is Iris Amdur and I am a sustainable building consultant and student of award-winning cookbook author Nimi Sunilkumar. I have sponsored this fundraiser to rebuild Nimi's home and teaching kitchen which incurred structural and moisture-related damage in the massive flooding that occurred in Kerala, India in mid-August.

With funds raised in collaboration with Nimi's international culinary students, the sustainable design community, and those who support women's empowerment around the globe, we will ensure that Nimi can continue to offer cooking classes to visitors to Munnar, provide a healthy living environment for her family and healthy meals for children in her neighborhood school. We will also provide her with video conferencing capability so her classes can reach a broader audience. Read more about Nimi at www.nimisrecipes.com

Working with an architectural, engineering and construction team based in India, we will design and build Nimi’s healthy home and kitchen offsite using decommissioned shipping containers. This will allow us to control quality and to erect the structure quickly in the mountainous region where Nimi lives. Using her home as a prototype, we intend to produce prefabricated sustainable home kits for people displaced by flooding in Kerala, by wildfires and hurricanes in the United States, and wherever high-quality, low-cost homes are needed. We are one world. Thanks for helping!

Hello to everyone who donated to this campaign to help Nimi rebuild after the flood. This is our first fore into crowdsource fundraising and we appreciate your support. I don't think either Nimi or I realized how much vigilant outreach it would take to reach our goal. We finally reached the 30% mark and are trying to see if we can get Impactguru to extend the campaign deadline for a few more weeks. We'd love your help reaching out to others to consider some year-end giving to this effort. I have discovered many things about Nimi during the design and fundraising process. Did you know that beyond Kerala cooking, she's working to preserve recipes of small villiages and tribal communities whose recipes are on the verge of extinction as young people move to the larger cities and don't cook the way their mothers and grandmothers have cooked for generations? Ask Nimi to tell you more about the Annipurni Project that she launched before the flood. Did you know that while Nimi's house is still standing, the walls are bubbling up with mold, which must contribute terribly to the respiratory problems that she and her son experience? Or that she worries with each rainfall that the structural damage that her home incurred will worsten before we are able to rebuild or the monsoon season begins (which ever comes first)? The government has not provided any financial assistance to her family, focusing first on helping those whose homes were completely destroyed (not just damaged like Nimi's)? Please ask your friends to help and to consider contributing to this campaign. If we are not able to extend the date of this campaign's completion, I will start a new one tomorrow and you will be hearing from me again. With warm regards, Iris Amdur
