Mondji, a small village in North Kashmir, has become a living nightmare for countless young boys, who were made to believe by Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh, a self-proclaimed Faith Healer, that a demon was raping them for their “sins.”
Kashmir police has charged Aijaz Sheikh for unnatural sexual offence under section 377 RPC. In the testimonies recorded in court, survivors of rape describe how their families sent them to Sheikh, who claimed to have powers to ward off evil spirits and black magic. In the guise of all this, he would sexually abuse young boys as young as 10 years old.
The case is currently being heard by Chief Judicial Magistrate in Sopore. The state lawyer, who oversees this case, is overloaded with other cases, which distracts attention from this case. Therefore, the victims, have decided to involve a private lawyer. Hiring a private lawyer costs approximately INR 500,000 (USD 8000), which is a hefty amount that none of the victims can afford to pay.
