“I remember every minute spent outside the ICU. We are going through the toughest time of our lives, and I pray this nightmare passes soon.”
My name is Aderita Cochrane. I am writing this with hope, fear, and anxiety intertwined about what may happen next. My husband, Mr Kevin Richard Jansen, has suffered a right thalamic bleed (intracerebral haemorrhage) along with diffuse intraventricular haemorrhage (bleeding into the lateral, 3rd, and 4th ventricles), leading to the development of hydrocephalus.
On the morning of 13th February, Kevin was completely fine. He went for his regular morning walk and returned home as usual. Suddenly, he began experiencing severe dizziness, which quickly worsened. We rushed him to Manipal Hospital’s Emergency Department. A CT scan revealed bleeding inside his brain, a life-threatening emergency that required immediate action.
Doctors performed emergency neurosurgery to drain the blood, and Kevin was shifted to the MICU under ventilator support. His condition remains extremely critical, and recovery will be long and challenging. Seeing the man I love so vulnerable and fighting for his life has been the hardest ordeal of my life. Yet, even now, he remains brave and strong.
The doctors have advised a long treatment plan for Kevin, which includes intubation and mechanical ventilation to support his breathing, along with the placement of an External Ventricular Drain (EVD) through a left frontal burr-hole procedure to relieve pressure caused by the bleeding. He has undergone Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) to assess the blood vessels in his brain and has received four doses of Inj.
Kevin is under continuous ICP (intracranial pressure) monitoring and is being treated with antibiotics, anti-oedema and neuroprotective medications to protect his brain, as well as hepatoprotective therapy. Due to platelet dysfunction, he has also required platelet transfusions as part of his ongoing critical care management.
We urgently need your support to continue Kevin’s life-saving treatment. I request that you come forward to help my husband heal.
