Haardik Dadwal was ten, when at the outset of winter he caught a fever which refused to go away. His parents, Bishwajit and Anjana were sure the boy had dengue, but blood tests revealed a heartbreaking truth. Haardik had Acute Leukemia, and cycles of chemotherapy and later a bone marrow transplant would be necessary to save his life. Haardik’s four year old sister was the identified stem cell donor; the brave little girl was determined to fight with her brother to throw off the leukemia demon.
As it turned out, the boy could not be saved. Haardik’s parents had started a fundraiser on Impact Guru to help raise his huge treatment costs, and as many as 181 donors had come together to raise over five lakh rupees to help the family. These funds came to no use, and Haardik passed away on December 30, 2017. He was eleven.
Once they got over the intensely painful initial grieving period, Haardik’s parents decided to spend a significant amount of their time and energy on helping children, like their son, with leukemia. They have chosen to continue running the Impact Guru fundraiser to be able to extend aid to other children with the disease, in a system of matching funds with other donors on the Impact Guru platform. The Dadwals’ resolution is to make sure that every child with leukemia gets adequate treatment and the best chance at life. To this end, they will continue to fundraise and make appeals to philanthropists to make the world a safer place for its children.
