No one ever expects to see a loved one who was once full of life suddenly seem dull, sad and weak. Nobody prepares you for the moment you notice it. But in that second, you know that everything has changed.
I watched my beloved sister, Sonam grow weaker since 2014. “Why do I feel like this?” she said to our family. She faced fevers, drastic weight loss and a loss of appetite. The days became harder for her and to watch her fight brings tears to my eyes. In her moments of weakness, I cannot help but think about her children who wonder when their mother will be alright.
We rushed her to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi. The doctors soon gave us the news that ached our hearts. The word leukemia sent chills down my spine.
What does my sister suffer from?
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a slow-progressing cancer of the blood and bone marrow, causing the overproduction of white blood cells.
“I do not want to feel so weak. I miss having the strength I once did.” - Sonam, 35.
What is the treatment required?
The doctors recommend chemotherapy, supportive care and an urgent bone marrow transplant.
The treatment does not come at a simple cost. My sister needs lakhs and so far we have spent all we could but it is still not enough. Sonam needs lakhs more to fight the aggressive leukemia.
I remember my sister telling me that she wants to be strong enough to take care of her 2 children.
