When Mahi was just six months old, my wife and I began to notice that she wasn’t responding to sounds the way other children her age did. She would not turn her head when we called her name or respond to the lullabies we sang. At first, we tried to convince ourselves it was nothing, that maybe she was just a little late in reaching her milestones. But deep down, we knew something was wrong.
After several visits to different doctors and countless tests, we finally received the diagnosis that changed our lives: our precious daughter, Mahi, has severe hearing loss. Hearing the doctor’s words felt like the ground had vanished beneath our feet. We were heartbroken and overwhelmed, unsure of what her future would hold.
My name is Chetan, and I am writing to you in the hope that you can help us give Mahi the chance she deserves. At just one year old, she has already faced more challenges than most children her age. Yet, she continues to smile and fill our lives with hope and love.
Mahi’s doctors have told us that she urgently needs a cochlear implant, a device that can help her hear sounds for the first time in her life. This surgery is our only hope to help Mahi learn to speak, enjoy music, and experience the world in all its fullness. The implant sends signals directly to the hearing nerve, bypassing the damaged parts of her inner ear.
Every day, I hold Mahi in my arms and whisper to her, “You will be fine, my baby girl. We will do whatever it takes to help you recover.” Sometimes, I have to reassure myself as much as I reassure her. My wife and I dream of the day when we can hear her call us “Mom” and “Dad.”
