A few days ago, I watched my son Ashish being taken into the ICU as doctors rushed to connect him to machines I had only heard about before. They told me a severe bacterial infection had spread through his body, Leptospira and Mycoplasma, and it had started attacking his organs. His kidneys, lungs, and liver have all been badly damaged. His skin and eyes slowly turned yellow as the bilirubin in his body kept rising, and breathing became so difficult for him that the doctors had no choice but to put him on a ventilator.
Now he lies there surrounded by tubes and monitors, fighting a battle at Chandan Hospital, Lucknow, none of us ever imagined. To keep him alive, the doctors have even placed him on ECMO, a machine that is helping his heart and lungs do the work his body cannot do right now.
The doctors tell me the damage from the infection is severe and recovery will be slow. They have warned us that Ashish may have to remain on these machines for at least another 10 days until the infection in his lungs and liver begins to settle. Even after that, his treatment will continue for a long time in the hospital. Right now, he is being given very strong antibiotics and medications while a machine breathes for him.
Please save my son’s life!
As a father, all I can do is stand outside the ICU and pray that his body finds the strength to fight back. Watching your child struggle between life and death is a pain no parent is ever prepared for, but I am holding on to hope that my son will open his eyes again and come back to us.
