I keep watching his chest rise and fall with each breath. Every breath he takes is tied to a ventilator. He depends on doctors in the PICU, and injections every hour to keep him alive. So when my husband broke the news that we have no money left and would have to stop treatment in the next few days, I felt like my own life would slip away with my son’s.
My name is Nagalakshmi, and I am from the village of Bhadrachalam, a sacred pilgrimage site in Telangana. Since the 19th of September, my world has been turned upside down. My son, Baba Bargav, began experiencing a fever and severe swelling in his abdomen.
We rushed him to the local hospital in Bhadrachalam, where the doctor gave us devastating news: fluid in his liver and lungs, and possible jaundice. We were immediately referred to a hospital in Khammam, three hours from home. For nine agonizing days, my baby fought for his life. His body had swelled, suffocating from the inside, and the doctors said there was water everywhere.
I sold my gold, and our small savings were gone. My husband’s farming income barely keeps our family afloat—just enough for him, me, and our two children. The crushing medical bills made an unbearable time even worse.
Miraculously, my son regained consciousness and could breathe again. We thought the worst was over. We left the hospital with medications and a follow-up plan.
But just three days later, our nightmare returned—Bargav fell into a coma. In sheer panic, we rushed back to the hospital. They stabilized him and referred us to Rainbow Hospital in Hyderabad, where we arrived on the 30th.
When we reached the hospital, the doctors’ faces told us everything—something was terribly wrong. It wasn’t just jaundice or fluid in his body. My son, Bargav, has factor XIII deficiency, leading to uncontrolled bleeding in his brain.
His condition, Bicytopenia, worsened with a sepsis infection. Everything that could go wrong, has. A CT scan revealed a blood clot in his brain, and specialists were called for immediate Brain Surgery.
Bargav was sedated for the procedure, and hasn’t woken up from a coma for over 12 hours. He is admitted in the PICU. I never thought this could happen to my baby - he was so active, playing with his sister just days ago. Now, he’s fighting for his life. He needs urgent mechanical ventilation, 7-10 days in the PICU, and crucial medications. We don’t know what else to do.
I’m terrified my son’s treatment will stop if we can’t pay. The doctors have cautioned us saying we need to keep going, but we’re completely out of funds. We've already spent nearly ten lakhs, borrowing from everyone I know. As a farmer, I can’t afford more, but my son’s life is on the line.
Our son has endured so much, and all we want is to bring him home healthy. Please, please help us save our precious boy.
