Growing up, Adarsh was my constant. My guide, my strength, the one who made me feel safe no matter what. I never imagined there would come a day when he would need me to be strong for him… and I wouldn’t know how.
Today, my 40-year-old brother is fighting leukaemia, a severe blood cancer and I am watching the strongest person I know slowly lose his strength.
He started chemotherapy with so much courage, never once complaining. But before his 4th cycle, his body gave up. He became so weak that he had to be admitted to the hospital for a week just to stabilise him. Seeing him like that, fragile, in pain, and helpless, broke something inside me.
That one week cost us ₹2 lakhs. And now, his liver is not supporting the treatment the way it should.
The doctors have now started immunotherapy. It is his only hope to survive. But each week, he needs injections that cost ₹1.5 lakhs, and along with that, daily doses costing ₹10,000 for a month.
Every time I look at him, I don’t see just a patient… I see the brother who held my hand through life. And now, I feel helpless because I can’t do the same for him.
I worry about what lies ahead. How can we afford the treatment that costs us lakhs? How can my brother fight cancer? These questions keep running through my mind.
