“My son is the happiest child you could meet. He loves playing with crayons and paints. His laughter is so musical. Everyone falls in love with Aadvik when they first meet him.”
Misfortune compounds tragedy
Sadly, 15 months ago, Aadvik began experiencing fatigue and high fever. He started appearing lifeless. Gradually, his eating patterns got irregular. His worried parents rushed him to a diagnostic center and got his blood tested. Since then doctors have been doing PRBC(Packed red blood cell) transfusion every 20-30 days, as an interim procedure to save Aadvik.
“We discovered that Aadvik is born with a genetic blood disorder called thalassemia major. The doctors suggested that only a bone-marrow-transplant will provide a permanent solution. We were told that there is a high likelihood of a sibling being an exact match. But Aadvik was our only son then. So we planned for a second child. Our second baby Priyasu was born last year, but unfortunately, Aadvik and Priyasu’s HLA did not match.”
Luck was on our side...
Thankfully, due to the progress in medical science, doctors have stated that Aadvik’s parents are a haploidentical match. It means that Aadvik’s damaged blood cells can be replaced with those of his parents’ stem cells, though the procedure is complicated and risky.
“It was such a relief to know that there was a good chance for him to recover! Soon, Aadvik will receive a transplant from either one of us and lead a life of fulfillment.”
Ashwin Patro, in the last 15 months has already spent all his savings on Aadvik’s diagnosis and treatment. He is sustaining his family, and paying for his son’s treatment and is now hard pressed for funds.
“When Aadvik was born, all we wanted was to watch him grow up like any normal child. He was so sharp for his age, that his father calls him ‘little Ein’ (Einstein). We never imagined that he’d be making multiple visits to the hospital and diagnostic centers. But we know that Aadvik will soon be okay and grow up like any other young boy.”
