17000 ft Foundation is a Not for Profit organization that is working to transform the lives of people living in very remote villages of Ladakh. Over the past 8 years, we have been working diligently across 200+ villages to upgrade schools, improve the quality of education, mobilize communities and generate awareness.
The Covid-19 Pandemic has forced the entire world into a lockdown sparing not even Ladakh, a high altitude cold desert with hundreds of tiny, remote and inaccessible villages in the Himalayan Mountain region of India. The challenging terrain, extreme remoteness of the region and inadequate healthcare infrastructure of the region has left the local Government with no option but to close down roads into and within Ladakh to keep the number of Covid-19 cases at bay. Today, we are happy to report that the swift action of the UT Government has managed to keep the region almost Covid free!
However, the closing of roads has left most of its communities isolated, unprepared and ill-equipped to detect and prevent a Covid-19 resurgence. With the lockdown extending the normal winter isolation by two more months, these communities, completely dependent on the main cities and neighbouring states for essentials, also lack the necessary hygiene, sanitation and medical supplies needed to prevent a Covid-19 crisis in their villages. The most at risk are the school going children, who have been out of school for 6 months from the start of winter lacking the knowledge, guidance and access to care that is only possible through the support of well-informed teachers and communities.
There is an urgent need to protect these highly vulnerable communities and children to avoid a resurgence of the Covid-19 crisis in villages least equipped to combat it
The only way to prevent this is by an Outreach into every remote village to generate awareness about the Covid-19 crisis amongst young students, prepare them with evidence-based guidance needed to stay safe and healthy and ensure that the villages have all the necessary health and hygiene essentials needed to combat the disease. Under this program:
Trained 17000ft facilitators will travel to 100 remote villages
Each village will have a day long Health & Hygiene workshop with Audio Visuals, discussions and Plays with students, teachers and Village Education Committee Members to generate awareness about Covid-19, health and hygiene practices, School safety measures and emergency preparedness. Awareness Posters will be stuck on school walls to help spread the message of social distancing, hand-washing and good hygiene. VEC Members and Primary Healthcare Workers will be sensitized for better collaboration and information dissemination. Children and parents will be taught mask making to ensure every member has a mask for self protection.
Each village will also be presented with a Health & Hygiene Kit with Liquid Hand wash with Dispensers (5 lt), Hand Towels (2 per child), Surface Cleaning Liquid (5lt), Digital Thermometers with Sterilizer (4Nos), Medical Registers and Charts
Help us beat this pandemic, one remote village at a time!
