Aasraa’s Outreach program in the slums has shown that the months of November to February record the highest dropouts and the lowest level of school attendance. On further inquiry we discovered one of the major reasons is the lack of adequate winter uniform. The children are not only battling the extreme cold but also are socially ostracized for not owning appropriate school uniform.
This roots back to the unfavorable environment they come from: extreme poverty, unsupportive parents, and education being low on priority compared to survival. This is further teamed with the anxiety of fitting in the school environment where inability to own uniform, books & stationery can become a reason enough for a child dropping out of school.
To ensure that our mainstreamed children do not drop out of school and are able to compete with their more fortunate peers, we need to constantly boost their confidence. Providing the children with appropriate winter uniform helps to ease one of the many stresses in their lives.
We aim to provide each of our 327 mainstreamed children with a set of winter uniform. A set includes – two full-sleeved shirts, two-worsted trousers/skirt, a sweater, a blazer, a cap, 2 pairs of socks & 2 thermals. The total expense of this project will amount to INR 9,55,660 at the rate of INR 2,923 per set.
