When my wife became pregnant with our second child, we were ecstatic. Our first daughter, Vamshika was excited to welcome a sibling and we began preparing to bring a new family member home soon.

However, our joy was short-lived. Weeks after Nithika was born, she began showing evident signs of jaundice. Her tiny little body turned an alarming yellow, and so did her eyes. My wife and I began panicking and took her to about ten different doctors, who all said it was merely jaundice.

But something told my wife that her condition was far more serious than jaundice. Call it a mother’s instinct. The last doctor we rushed looked deeper into the matter. A few tests and scans then told us what we’d been dreading. Her condition was more serious. She had Biliary Atresia: a condition that blocked the flow of bile from her liver, causing the organ to damage rapidly.

Doctors urged that a Kasai procedure was the only attempt they could make to repair the damage in her bile ducts before her liver could completely fail. Despite its low success rate, we agreed immediately, willing to take any chance at saving our girl.

As it turned out, the procedure did nothing to improve her condition. Nithika’s only hope now is a liver transplant. We have already spent over Rs 8 lakh on her treatment in the past. With an income of Rs. 15,000/ month and almost all my savings gone, I cannot hope to pay for her transplant.

Nithika has been awaiting the transplant for around 6 months now. Her condition has deteriorated rapidly over time. Her abdomen is swollen and her urine is unnaturally dark. My wife has been identified as the liver donor, and Global Hospital, Chennai has agreed to perform the procedure as soon as we collect enough funds.

I request you to contribute towards our little one’s recovery and spread the word among your family and friends by sharing our fundraiser on social media. You are the only one who can save our child.

Thank you,
Muralichandar Sekar.
