“Our baby’s life was always riddled with suffering, it started right from when he was in his mother’s womb. A routine scan revealed that he would be born with a hole in his heart. As to-be-parents, we were devastated. As someone who earns just Rs 10,000 per month, I was overwhelmed to even think about the financials of his operation. But thankfully, my family and friends were there to financially support me throughout. They stuck by us through all of it. Now to think that our Vithesh has to relive all that suffering, even after 3 surgeries; I cannot help but cry- ”- Saravanan, Vithesh’s father
Vithesh had his third operation in July 2018, they operated his heart for the second time.
After 2 surgeries, his parents sincerely hoped that his third surgery would be the last time their 2 year old had to endure another surgery. Their hopeful journey soon came to an end. During mid- August, their baby started having breathing problems.
“After the third surgery, his health improved and we got used to seeing him run around the house with his favourite red car. But around the same time, he caught a common cold which led to severe chest congestion. He’d stay up all night gasping for air, unable to sleep.. He would turn and try to sleep on his face, just to struggle and turn back again as suffocation would engulf him. Seeing his poor body heave and shake as he tried to breathe broke me down from within.. - Vithesh’s mother
When Vithesh’s parents took him to the hospital, they assumed that it was going to be a common cold.
They were confident that our baby just had a common cold for all the symptoms he had displayed was associated with common cold. But the doctors immediately suggested getting a scan and the results of the scan made their worst fear come true. Their Vithesh’s heart problem has come back to plague him.
“I was gripping the scan results tightly in my hand as I walked to the doctor’s office. As soon as the doctor opened the envelope, he said the words “your son requires another surgery”, I clutched that envelope tightly and desperately wished for this whole thing to be a bad dream. But I grew very hopeful when the doctors told me that his fourth surgery looks extremely promising and will put an end to his suffering”.- Vithesh’s dad.
The doctors told them this fourth surgery could definitely mean he is inching closer to leading a healthy and a happy life. Vithesh’s parents didn’t understand much except for the fact that this time there is a real chance that their son remains closest to having a much deserved chance at starting to live his childhood out. The doctors told them that his surgery will cost them Rs 3 lakhs. Vithesh’s father is already drowning in debts upto 4 lakhs; that he incurred from the previous surgeries. His monthly salary of Rs 10,000 doesn’t do much to help as well.
