It’s been eight months since the diagnosis. My son is only two years old and the only life he knows is one where he cries all day and night. He is unable to express his discomfort and pain in any other way. His skin and eyes are dull and his cheeks are hollow. Kritik lost his youth-like chubbiness months ago.
When Kritik began crying endlessly into the nights, my instincts instantly told me something was wrong. We didn’t wait for more signs; the crying alone worried us sick. We rushed Kritik to several hospitals in Ludhiana and Delhi where we were repeatedly turned away. Each time, we heard the same statement; that our child was not suffering from “anything serious”.
Finally, Fortis Hospital in Delhi agreed to look further into the matter. They took several tests and scans. They costed a fortune and I had to borrow from family and friends to be able to pay for them, but they were worth it. We found out that Kritik’s heart was unable to pump out enough clean blood to supply his entire body.
Though we knew something was wrong, we didn’t imagine the devastating conclusion. The only treatment that can save him now is a heart surgery. And that’s not the full story. A healthy 2-year-old is ideally supposed to weigh 10 kg or so. However, my Kritik weighs all of 6 kg. His heart is rapidly failing his body, and all we have been able to do so far is watch helplessly.
His doctors agree that he is far too underweight to take on such a serious surgery. We need to prepare him slowly with sufficient nutrition and additional medication to help him gain a healthy amount of weight. Coupled with the heart surgery, this is going to cost us Rs 5 lakh.
I earn a humble living by installing and repairing gas cylinders in Jalandhar, Punjab. My income is far from stable. My wife is a homemaker and Kritik is our world. I have no one to turn to for loans - you are my last hope. I request you to make a contribution to help us save our child and share our story on Facebook and Whatsapp.
