What does the modern world need?
Former US President, Franklin D. Roosevelt hit the nail on its head when he said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”
The youth are the future of the country. The quality of youth will define the quality of a country, the kind of future a nation will have. If we can direct the energy of our youth in constructive channels it can lead to development and progress.
If not tapped in the right way, this very energy of the youth can tip over the other side and become destructive and regressive for the society. If we look around, we realize that our youth is losing touch with a sense of right and wrong or good and bad. Today’s youth is battling with drug and alcoholic addictions, marital infidelity, and mental depression, all rising to frightening proportions and culminating in violence, crime and suicide. The result is visible for all to see. Nothing inspires the new youth except shortcuts to making money, to achieve success and realizing their dreams.
One of the challenges is to develop character and discrimination in our future generations; to impart relevant values, attitudes and skills; so that they ultimately develop emotionally, intellectually and morally and display responsible behaviour.
What is our agenda?
We, at ISKCON Chowpatty, prioritize a close connect with the youth.
As a nation - wide initiative, we have built a team of dedicated volunteers committed to the cause of helping the youth become an asset for society. We give them tools that build their soft skills, we give them resources to deal with failures and disappointments, we give them guidance when they are attracted to drugs and alcohol and most of all we give them a higher purpose and love for living.
How do we help?
- Awareness programs in schools and colleges
Every year we conduct annual programs for school and college students on topics such as drug addiction, AIDS, alcoholism, dealing with depression etc. Medical experts, counsellors and mentors offer guidance and treatment to 2000 students across India every year. Selected students are enrolled for our advanced Value Education Program conducted at youth centres across Mumbai. This has worked well for adolescents and teenagers by making them aware of perils of anti-social habits and activities and empowering them with determination to say no to them.
- Monthly Value Education Programs – Prerana and Chetana
Prerana (for teenage boys) and Chetana (for teenage girls) are programs that focus on creating awareness on contemporary social issues like drug/tobacco addictions, alcoholism, inspiring them to lead a value centric meaningful and regulated life. An average of 600 boys and 200 girls benefit every month through these programs running since a decade.
We provide residential shelter for college students, unmarried professionals such that they can integrate a self – disciplined lifestyle with their education and career. They are provided with nutritious sattvic food, hygienic living, study room facilities, training in sattvic living, training in interpersonal and intrapersonal skills and personal counselling. There are 16 youth centres across Mumbai, Nanded, Baramati and other parts of Maharashtra.
- Youth Counselling
- Youth are more affected by extreme emotions, lifestyle stress, peer pressure, lack of direction etc. Our expert team of lifestyle coaches and counsellors hand hold them through these delicate situations so they emerge stronger, wiser and confident.
- Annual Education Tour
Nothing inspires the youth like first - hand experience of rich cultural heritage of India. This annual excursion imbibes in the youth deep values of our ancient culture required for simple living and high thinking.
An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. Nothing could be truer than this. In order to engage the youth constructively, we conduct training workshops in institutes like IITs, NITs, etc. Positive engagement keeps them away from self – destructive habits and at the same time gives them vocational skills for career development.
