SOS – Muthupaettai Lagoon Short Description It is usual goons speak on behalf of their Masters. Exceptionally I am a Lagoon crying out for help. I am Muthupettai lagoon situated southern end of the Cauvery river delta on the Bay of Bengal, covering an area of approximately 6,803.01 ha of which only 4% is occupied by well-grown mangroves. The rivers Paminiyar, Koraiyar, Kilaithankiyar, Marakkakoraiyar and other tributaries of the river Cauvery flow into me supplying fresh water. My name 'lagoon' refers to the shallow salt or brackish water body that lies close to the sea. I am the home for a lot of endangered species.I also serves as a breeding and spawning grounds several aquatic organisms like fishes, prawns and crabs. I am important for the livelihoods of coastal communities as they rely on these aquatic resources. I act against the climate change and aid in resilience towards disasters like tsunami. I regulate the PH of water in the area and act as a buffer preventing salt water intrusion. But the times are changing now. The rivers that feed me with fresh water are being encroached upon. Anthropogenic waste is directly dumped into the rivers that feed me. Sporadic installation of shrimp farms in my proximity has led to salinization and pollution from the chemicals. For instance my friend Kandhaparichanriver who used to feed fresh water into me has been encroached and eliminated. Resultantly there is reduced fish catch, conversion of agriculture lands to shrimp farms, reduced income from agriculture, degradation of mangroves, salinity ingress, reduced ground water are immensely affecting me and those who are dependent on me I seek your help in reviving my health and securing the livelihoods of the communities relying on my resources and thereby preventing their migration to other areas in search of livelihoods. Fundraiser Story The funds raised through this campaign will be used to secure the livelihoods of fishing and other communities which rely on me and to take steps towards reviving my health through appropriate measures. The funds will be used to strengthen litigation against the illegal shrimp farms in proximity to me. Tourism development leading to commercialization of the area I cover should be stopped. Utilization of the funds to enable the local governments to remove the encroachments in the river canals and drainage canals will be done. I amrequesting the funds to secure the livelihoods of the fishing community by increased income from fishing, other communities through increased income from agriculture and alternative livelihoods. I will use the funds for regeneration of mangroves leading to reduced vulnerability to disasters. Increased mangrove cover, removal of encroachments of rivers and canals that feed me will improve my health which will yield better water quality and increase in ground water. The following activities will be undertaken to save me through your funds • Legal awareness trainings and workshops on EIA, CRZ, Land Acquisition, Marine Fisheries • Mapping violations, hotspots, water and land resources. Need analysis for livelihoods • Alternative livelihood opportunities – microlevel entrepreneurship • Formation of fisher women co-operative society • Afforestation of Mangroves Benevolent and magnanimous donors who care for nature and the livelihoods of one of the most deprived communities can send in their donations through online transaction to Giveindia. Every drop counts so however small your contribution is I would be happy to receive and acknowledge the same.

Short Description

It is usual goons speak on behalf of their Masters. I am home to 177 species of birds and 364 plant species.

But the times are changing now. The rivers that feed me with fresh water are being encroached upon. Anthropogenic waste is directly dumped into the rivers that feed me. Sporadic installation of shrimp farms in my proximity has led to salinization and pollution from the chemicals. Resultantly there is reduced fish catch, conversion of agriculture lands to shrimp farms, reduced income from agriculture, degradation of mangroves, salinity ingress, reduced ground water are immensely affecting me and those who are dependent on me.

I seek your help in reviving my health and securing the livelihoods  of the communities relying on my resources and thereby preventing their migration to other areas in search of livelihoods.
