Ever since childhood, I have lived with generalized dystonia, a severe movement disorder that causes painful muscle contractions, stiffness and uncontrollable movements. As I grew older, it slowly affected my neck, back, arms and hands, making everyday tasks difficult to manage on my own. - Bharath Kumar, 25.
Losing both my parents at a very young age was painful. All I have is my elder brother, Naveen, who became my biggest support after they passed away. I have always dreamed of becoming independent so that I can share our family’s responsibilities with Naveen.
But today, my right hand is almost completely unusable, while I can use only around 20% of my left hand. My neck moves uncontrollably and painfully, and even speaking can be difficult as my vocal muscles are affected too.
Still, at 25, I refuse to let dystonia decide my future.
Since I could not use my hands normally, I taught myself to use my feet. I learned to eat, write, paint and work on a computer with them. Despite many challenges, I completed my BCA with distinction, pursued my MCA and worked in the IT/QA field. I now work from home and dream each day of becoming financially independent soon.
I have tried medicines and Botox injections, but every relief so far has been limited. There is one hope. My doctors have now advised Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery to help control my abnormal movements and improve my quality of life.
For me, DBS is more than treatment. It is a chance to work with greater confidence, travel more independently, perform everyday tasks with less difficulty. The surgery and related treatment are expected to cost lakhs, which my brother and I cannot afford all on our own.
