RAW was created to break the inter generational cycle of violence and crime in New Zealand by offering women offenders on release into the community the opportunity to build new lives for themselves and their children.

They are encapsulated by multiple levels of support including housing, education, work experience and coaching. As part of assisting them into employment RAW is launching an entrepreneur programme to help them into their own businesses.

The Barriers

For a woman who has served multiple prison sentences her criminal history makes her unattractive to employers. Even after years of leading a legal life gaining meaningful employment is very difficult.

Added to this is the stress of living hand to mouth, under education, finding appropriate child care to look after her children when able to work and poor self-esteem from years of stigmatization by society for her past crimes.

The Way Forward

To give these women a chance at financial independence RAW is running an entrepreneur programme which will assist each woman to identify a business opportunity to match her skills, workshops on running a business and financial assistance and mentoring  to start her business.

Making a Difference

RAW’s philosophy is building a network of long term support around these women to allow them to thrive rather than strive. Without this level of support these women would be in prison again, and their children in state care and on the road to criminal lives, addiction or poverty through under education.

To date we have women moving into their own homes with their children, working, regaining self-respect and the confidence to parent their children towards positive and productive lives.  With your support more women will regain the ability to lead their families towards a prosperous and fulfilling future.
