Lets Create an Empowering Space for Adolescents and Youth
The one who benefit from the funds: Shaishav
About Non- Profits and use of funds
Shaishav, which means childhood in Gujarati and many other Indian languages, is a volunteer organisation committed to the rights of children. Our focus is on child labour and we believe that quality education is one of the most effective means to keep children out of labour force and ensure child rights.
India has a large young population and opportunities are slowly increasing. Limitations of our education system often mean that these opportunities are inaccessible to underprivileged youth as they do not have the right skills, knowledge and/or qualifications. This is exacerbated by gender inequality and cultural attitudes which manifest as pressure to marry young or join the workforce early (as unskilled labour). This in turn, reinforces inequality. Additionally, limited prospects leads to increased competition and we believe this results in more self-centred young people in our society.
Tarunsena is a collective for all youth from communities in Bhavnagar with a high percentage of “graduates” from Balsena (our children’s collective). It provides a platform for youth to share opinions, learn new skills and lead action on issues. Shaishav’s focus is on developing valuable life, vocational and entrepreneurship skills with Tarunsena to foster individual development, combat inequality and encourage members to contribute within society, especially to act as mentors for younger children. Area Resource Centres (ARCs) within underprivileged communities are the vector to strengthen skills and knowledge in marginalised youth to develop responsible citizens.
Our primary focus thus far has been children and through our ARC, we have provided vocational and entrepreneurship training to more than 300 children and 80 youth each year. Additionally, our life-skills, extra-curricular and interactive education and leadership development programme has directly benefited more than 5000 children and 200 youth in the last two years.
We intend to reach more youth through the new ARCs and offer a greater range of training which when coupled with our ongoing leadership development and social engagement programme for youth should create well rounded, empathetic and responsible citizens to lead social change in society.
