I am Vandan Ahuja and my mother is my strength. She brought me up all alone, ensuring that I get the best possible education and become a genuinely good human being. Although, I saw how she struggled to make ends meet, she hid her challenges with her motherly affections.
For a long time, I thought my mother was a superwoman who would find a way to save me. She was already worried about me, as I struggled with dizziness and high fever for over a week. So, when I was recently diagnosed with a virulent form of cancer on October 29, 2019, I wondered how the news would affect my superwoman. But I had to tell her. I could never hide anything from her, anyway.
The news that I had an onset of cancer broke my mother’s heart. But what is more tragic is that she tries to wear a smile courageously whenever we talk about my disease. She tells me, just like I passed my CA (Chartered Accountancy) exam with flying colours, I will also overcome cancer in no time.
Her positivity spurred me on. I felt a few rounds of chemotherapy is all I needed to overcome cancer. It would not be a big deal! Unfortunately, my initial chemotherapy sessions failed to destroy cancer. Instead, my cancer reached the second stage. As I sat hopelessly, medical report in hand, I wondered what my mother’s life would be when I was gone.
My mother would be left alone- no husband, no child!
That was the moment I realized I had to fight cancer, tooth, nail and sinker.
My Journey with Cancer
The doctors have started an aggressive form of chemotherapy, which will destroy my cancer cells and minimize the side-effects of ordinary chemotherapy. The doctors have assured me that once the cancer cells are destroyed, they will prepare me for a bone marrow transplant.
A bone marrow transplant is a sure-shot way to cure my cancer!
As I am an only child, I don’t have anyone in the family who can donate me the bone marrow. Therefore, I have contacted four of the best hospitals in New Delhi who specialize in the treatment of cancer. They ran HLA tests on their donors and they have all confirmed that I will get a matching donor easily.
Help me beat cancer
That is one battle won. However, the biggest challenge is to arrange funds for the Bone Marrow Transplant. I was working as a financial consultant and had to quit my job three months ago because of my cancer treatment. I have already spent Rs 14 lakh (my savings) to pay for the hospital bills and medication.
If I had any more savings left, I would not have come to you for support. I need to live not only because I am young and have so much to achieve, but also because my mother needs me. I know she weeps when I am not looking. She might pretend to be strong, but she is breaking inside. In this whole wide world, she has only me, and I have her.
