Sometimes adversity strikes not once or twice but over and over, perhaps unwilling to accept that its target is stronger and prepared for battle, no matter how difficult the circumstances.

Niveda’s story is one of strength and survival and it began when she was just two years old. Abandoned by her father, she soon lost her mother in a tragic accident. The orphaned child and her sister Vanita, a year and a half older than her, who barely understood the quantum of their loss, were raised by grandparents who struggled to make ends meet. The one bright spot was her grandfather who ensured that the girls went to school and pursued higher education.

But of course, fate had other plans. In early 2013, just 19 years old, Niveda went into the CSI hospital with severe pain in her left arm. Tests at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology and HCG Hospital revealed the worst. She had Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects bones, or soft tissue around the bones, of 10 to 20 year olds.

It took a great deal of courage for Niveda to overcome her initial dejection and submit to cancer treatment at HCG hospital. Dr. Pramod. S. Chinder, her orthopaedic oncology surgeon, guided her through her 14 chemotherapy sessions between March 2013 and 2014. Beyond the physical trauma there was also the heavy burden of economics and mental stress. Help, however, came through a foreign based NGO spurring her on to complete her treatment.

But there were more complications. The impact of chemotherapy on her mind and body were compounded by a series of surgeries that she needed to fix a rod in her arm. It is a tribute to her patience and perseverance that she eventually got out of the hospital and back to her education and a normal life. At 23, Niveda completed her graduation in commerce, having braved misfortune, looking ahead to a management degree and a bright future.

But her tests and tribulations were far from over. She met with an accident which displaced the rod in her arm, piercing her elbow. She suffers from excruciating pain and is unable to move her arm. Niveda now needs to undergo another major surgery as soon as possible to replace her elbow and have a new rod fixed. Further delay in her treatment could result in infection or worse, require amputation or even threaten her life.

The surgery will cost Rs 8,00,000/- and Niveda is in dire need of your financial support. Your contribution can help this survivor get through this next battle and get on with her life.
