For as long as I can remember, I wished for nothing more than a happy, healthy life for my father. I never imagined that such a simple wish would one day feel so distant.
My name is Tushar, and for five years, my father, Mr Surendra Bhandari, has bravely fought Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, specifically DLBCL stage 3B, a relentless cancer of the immune system.
Our journey began in January 2020, when sudden swelling in his abdomen revealed clusters of lymph nodes. Over time, these nodes spread to other parts of his body. The diagnosis shattered us, but we held on to hope through rounds of chemotherapy. When the cancer relapsed in 2022, my father underwent a bone marrow transplant. Another relapse in January 2024 meant radioactive therapy. Each treatment brought a flicker of hope, but also more physical and emotional exhaustion.
Now, in June 2025, after weeks of severe stomach pain, doctors confirmed another relapse. My father is currently taking injections twice a week and oral medications to prepare for the next, and possibly last, lifeline: CAR-T cell therapy.
But the disease has left him fragile. He struggles with low appetite, constant stomach pain, and persistent nausea. His blood reports show alarming irregularities.
We exhausted every saving, took loans, and yet the costs keep rising. My father, once a dedicated employee at a private company, can no longer work. I am the sole breadwinner in my family right now.
The doctors at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Delhi, have recommended CAR T cell therapy. This treatment is a personalised immunotherapy that genetically engineers a patient's own T-cells (a type of immune cell) to recognise and kill cancer cells. But it costs more than we could imagine, a staggering amount of 50 lakhs, which we cannot manage on our own.
