Thirteen Years ago, I was blessed with my son, Subhajit. Our lives changed forever; my little boy became our whole world. My husband and I finally had a reason to be truly happy. But that joyful phase didn’t last long.
My name is Pinky Chakraborty. I am reaching out to you with a heart full of fear. A few years after Subhajit was born, we noticed he had difficulty sitting and standing. Over time, his challenges grew: significant muscle stiffness, uncontrolled movements (dystonia), poor motor control, feeding difficulties, and even self-injury tendencies.
We visited many doctors, and after a few tests, the doctor said a big word: Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome (LNS), a rare, inherited metabolic and neurological disorder.
My 12-year-old kid often endures episodes of pain. His mobility is severely restricted, and he needs protective padding, restraints, and a customised wheelchair just to stay safe. Subhajit is completely dependent on caregivers for every aspect of daily life.
My husband and I were managing this battle of life, hoping that with time, Subhajit would recover. But the worst wasn’t over yet. 9 months back, my 2nd child, Sudarshan, was born. He had early signs of motor delay, poor muscle control, and feeding challenges.
Later, we realise that he has the same condition as Subhajit. His symptoms are progressing, and doctors expect the condition to worsen without immediate therapy and long-term medical supervision. He also requires close neurological monitoring.
My husband works as a Zomato delivery guy. We had used all the savings we had. We reached out to people and borrowed more money than we can repay.
My kids require quarterly blood tests, Ultrasound/imaging for kidney risk, and neurological evaluations. They also need daily physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and behavioural therapy.
Doctors have stated that treatment cannot be delayed under any circumstances. I long to see my children like any other kids. This is not the way I imagined their childhood to be.
