Mr. S. Lawrence, Director of the Real Charitable Trust is hailing from most neglected slum of north Chennai. After school education he obtained bachelors degree in Commerce from Loyola College and Master degree in Sociology from Annamalai University. He has also obtained diploma in AIDS and family counseling, MS office, and waste Management.
Through his unpleasant experience and living condition of the slum dwellers, he has started “Real Charitable Trust” with the help of likeminded people. The main aim of this real charitable trust is to uplift the socio-economic, education, health, cultural and environment status of the slum people in Chennai and rural district of northern Tamil Nadu. Since its inception, he has been carrying out various awareness and development intervention for the betterment most disadvantaged sections of the society.
Mr. Lawrence, the Chief trustee has got rich experience in organizing programs in colleges and schools in order to create awareness among students about waste management, environment, hygiene and health aspects. He has initiated waste management programs in Chennai slums and outskirts of Chennai city in an effective way. He is also teaching Tamil Nadu open university Diploma syllabus of life coping skills with the help of ICRDCE to the inmates of Central Prison at Puzhal with the permission of prison department. He gained knowledge in working at various levels such as field staff in Madras Christian Council of Social Work, as counselor in an NGO called Karunalaya for street children, as Project Coordinator in We Care for people living in HIV AIDS, as Project Manager in Bloosm Trust for HIV AIDS prevention program of parents to child transmission and Coordinator cum Trainer for Self Help Groups of rural women & gypsy in Don Bosco Social Work Organization called SURABI. He is acting as Public Relationship Officer in initiating zero waste management in NEEL METAL FANALCA (NMF) in order to create garbage free society through source segregation awareness in the Metropolitan Corporation of Chennai City. Considering the impacts of the programs carried out through Real Charitable Trust, Government agencies and media has appreciated and encouraged him to extend service to more people. Evaluating the entire programs of the Trust and caliber of Mr. Lawrence, a United Kingdom based University called “ACADEMY OF UNIVERSAL GLOBAL PEACE “awarded him honorary DOCTORATE. His main aspiration is to create literate, healthy, and hygienic society.
The students studying from I st to V (one Batch) VI to VIII th ( another batch standard who hail from the villages are included in our project. The children of widows, sick parent(s) or children of physically challenged parent(s) and those whose parents are engaged in very menial/low paying jobs such as coolies, domestic workers, rag pickers would be given top priority in this project. With a special focus on promoting reading habit and value education the evening schools with a mission to improve the quality and consistency of education of the children of the deprived slums. 10 centers will be started with utilization of welfare association premises and 20 teachers will be appointed as two for each center. An intensive training on need of education as a tool for social change and skills in handling students various methods of teaching with play way method and playing a motivator role will be organized for the selected teachers. Volunteers and youth with social concern both male and female will be given opportunity to work as teachers. Monthly meeting for the teachers and the leaders of the areas will be conducted and suggestions and ideas will be obtained from them and included in the enhancement of the centers. Various competitions and quiz events will be organized on academic, humanism and value based educations and prizes and certificates will be provided for the winners and the winner centers will be honored with award and shields.
Evening Tuition Centers in 20 deprived slums and rural area will get benefited and 20 teachers’ i.e. 1 teacher for each center will be appointed. 30 students hailing from STD I to V (one Batch) VI to VIIIth ( another batch ) will be admitted in each center and totally 600 poor students will be benefited through the 20 tuition centers in the year 2017 and 2018. The academic and value based education we provide to the children of the villages would bring a bit of sunshine into their lives and might work as a stepping stone to improving their standards of lives in the future.
