Priyadarshika Dutta is 5 years old. She is in the PICU of Institute of Child Health, the paediatric intensive care unit, on a ventilator, fighting to breathe. Her food pipe has narrowed so severely that her body can no longer take in solid food.
When Priyadarshika was just 3 years old, she unknowingly drank caustic soda, a chemical so corrosive it began silently burning through her food pipe from the inside. There was no dramatic warning. No way for a toddler to understand what was happening. By the time her parents knew, the damage was already done.
Over the years, the Dutta family watched their only child, the joy of their lives, born after 8 long years of marriage, carry that invisible wound. They held onto hope. They held onto each other. A month ago, everything changed.
Priyadarshika began struggling with solid food. Her food pipe, already scarred and narrowed from years of damage, had worsened to the point of crisis. The doctors stretched it open in an emergency procedure. But it wasn't enough. Infection had set in. Her body, overwhelmed and exhausted, gave way, and she slipped into respiratory distress.
Today, she breathes only with the help of a machine.
Her father, an electrician, earns ₹500 on the days he gets work. Her mother has never worked outside the home. Together, they are standing at the door of a hospital, their daughter on the other side of it, and no way to pay what it takes to keep her there.
